American Balloon Company

Web Design, Illustration

Overview

American Balloon Company is a balloon decorating company based in Glen Ellyn, providing custom balloon pieces and décor for parties, meetings, and sporting events.

The Challenge

While working with American Balloon Company, I was tasked to redesign their website and identity with a fun and modern look. I also designed the balloonize prototype as a value proposition to help differentiate their business from other competitors.

Research

Doing some market research, I uncovered that balloon decorating is a skill not many people users know about by browsing through forums. Through user reviews, I learned most new users choose the store based on the event photos posted on their website and through social media.

Beyond this, I learned balloon artists can build almost anything from balloons such as a house to a dress. There is even a balloon conference dedicated to balloon decorating.

Designing a Balloon

To coincide with the website redesign, I designed a playful identity that was targeted a younger audience. I also wanted to keep the original color scheme to coincide with the company’s name.

Illustrating the Characters

I created illustrations to provide the website with a more a fun atmosphere. Flying penguins, a baby, and cow are some of the custom illustrations I designed to excite users about balloon decorating when browsing the website.

Balloonize your Idea

Along with the website redesign I designed a Balloonize prototype to let users customize their own balloon sculptures, arches or columns. For the balloon sculptures, I designed a balloonizing process where users can upload or select their own character and event photo. When selecting the arch/columns option, users can select the pen tool to draw an arch/columns on their photo. Once finalized, users can submit their proposal to get an estimate price for their idea.

Visualizing the Site

From top to bottom, I created an illustrated balloon narrative that guided users through the website’s homepage. The navigation was also simplified to help consolidate the content onto fewer web pages along with descriptions for each service. In addition, I also took balloon photographs to represent the testimonials and upcoming events section.
