Overview

The Design Museum of Chicago (DMC) is a non-profit cultural institution that strives to inspire, educate and innovate design for the local community. Their exhibit, “Great Ideas of Humanity” showcased posters inspired by the 1975 advertising campaign, “Great Ideas of Western Man.” The exhibit’s goal was to show great ideas can come from anyone. Local designers were tasked with taking quotes from select Chicago area students to design posters that illustrated each quote. The intent of the posters was to spark thoughtful discussions from viewers.

The challenge

My team and I were tasked with creating a digital product to help DMC’s users define and expand their definition of “great ideas.” Since “Great Ideas of Humanity” opened in April 2018, DMC’s main user base consisted of mostly professional designers (based on DMC’s survey). Their goal was to expand their demographic to encompassed everyone who has visited a museum. However, our team believed “designing for everyone would be designing for no one.” To incorporate this idea, we needed to narrow down our audience to a specific museum attendee. After talking with several users, we decided to focus our attention on suburban parents who used to live in the city.
