Kickin' it down the Mother-Road

Day 7

AMARILLO, TEXAS

By Jeffrey Jacobson

Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch is an amazing attraction on the path of the Mother Road, Historic Route 66. An art group called The Ant Farm created this public art installation in 1974. A number of Cadillacs have their front ends buried in the dirt with their back ends sticking up out of the ground. So many people visit this place daily that whatever you paint in the morning has probably been painted over by that evening! The angle of the cars is supposed to match the angle of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The cars have been spray painted constantly by visiting tourists over the years. After a set amount of time, the owner goes out and whitewashes all the Cadillacs and people will start creating new designs. So, when you do come to Cadillac Ranch, get your spray paint can and have your camera ready, because no two pictures will look alike.

Big Texan Ranch

While traveling through Amarillo you can never miss the Big Texan Steakhouse. An official Route 66 attraction, the Big Texan Steak Ranch is everything you would expect. Over the top sculptures, old wild-west style motel, walls decorated with buffalo, antelope, prairie dogs and of course the dining room.

The dining room is covered in mounted animals and has a very "wild west" feel to it. The menu is very large and has something for aeveryone. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to provide advice on the dishes we should order. My companion decided to attempt the free 72 oz. steak challenge (but he only made it 1/3 the way through), while I decided to keep it simple with the Texas strip. Keep in mind that if you choose any of the toppings, it will be a lot of toppings. For example, I went with the mushrooms on top and the whole steak was covered in mushrooms. We didn't have room for dessert, but the cakes and pies looked delicious.
